During his minority the government was entrusted to a regency, and
although the kingdom was kept free from foreign wars, it was misgoverned.
The education of the young king was so neglected that he was nearly
illiterate. In 1672 he assumed the reins of government. Under terms of an
agreement made by the regency, Charles in 1674 entered the Dutch Wars as
an ally of Louis XIV, king of France. The Swedish army and navy were
unprepared for war, and Sweden lost territory, although much of it was
restored by the Peace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1679. Charles, angered
by the military failure, and supported by the burghers and peasants,
instituted reforms that strengthened the armed forces and considerably
reduced the power of the former regents and nobles. In 1682 the Riksdag,
the Swedish legislature, granted the king absolute authority. By a
judicious administration of revenues, he wiped out the public debt,
reorganized the army and navy, and by 1693 was able to dispense with
extraordinary subsidies. Although he had absolute power, he never imposed
a tax without consent; and he published an annual account of revenues and
expenditures. He was succeeded by his son Charles XII.

The first Swedish ruler of the Palatinate dynasty, he became king when his
cousin, Queen Christina, abdicated in his favor. Charles succeeded to the
throne of an almost bankrupt kingdom; nevertheless, he hoped to increase
the territory of the country at the expense of nations weakened by the
Thirty Years' War. In 1655, on the pretext of preventing his cousin, King
John II Casimir of Poland, from seizing the Swedish crown, Charles invaded
Poland. He formed an alliance with Frederick William, elector of
Brandenburg, and was victorious at Warsaw. Soon thereafter Russia,
Denmark, and the Holy Roman Empire all declared war on Sweden, and
Frederick William switched sides when the Poles agreed to recognize his
territorial claims. Charles retired from Poland, but in 1658, leading his
army across the frozen sea, he forced the Danes to capitulate. By the
Treaty of Roskilde, King Frederick II of Denmark ceded all his lands in
southern Sweden to Charles. Hoping for a total conquest of Denmark,
Charles attacked again later in the year but was rebuffed by a stout
Danish defense of Copenhagen. Charles died soon thereafter, and he was
succeeded by his son Charles XI.

She was a daughter of John George I, Elector of Saxony, and his spouse Princess Magdalene Sibylle of Prussia. She was engaged in 1627 and married in 1630. Her marriage was arranged by the Danish queen Dowager Sophie, and the duchess Dowager of Saxony, Hedwig of Denmark. In her dowry, she brought paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder.

In 1659, she became a widow, and in 1660 moved to Wittum Husum Castle. Her household at Husum became renowned as a culture center, and she herself a noted patron. She produced an interpretation of the Bible in 1664.
