Går en fra fergeleiet ved Verketsøya i Hurum langs stranda østover et par hundre meter, vil en i sjøen se restene av gamle påler. Glassverkets brygge lå her og her ble glassproduktene lastet om bord i skutene. For det meste var det flasker i brunt glass. Det kan en lett konstatere på stedet, for på stranda og i sjøen ligger en mengde glasskår. Er en heldig, kan en finne flaskebunner og større biter av flasker som ble knust og ikke kom lengre enn hit. Av Nils Johan Rønniksen Glassverket ga Verket nytt stedsnavn. Før glassverkets tid het halvøyas sørlige del Strømsmoen. Verketsøya hadde også andre navn i gammel tid: først Lønøen og så Kroeøen. Det siste navnet skyldtes trolig at det en gang lå en kro der. Det var Carsten Anker (1747 X 1824) som tok initiativet til å legge et glassverk nettopp her. Et annet alternativ for stedsplassering var også i Hurum, nemlig på Sætre. Men Verket ble valgt. Det ble bygslet tomt på gården Hovs grunn i 1779. Ankers tanke var at glassproduksjonen i Norge burde økes slik den kunne dekke de forente rikers (Norges og Danmarks) behov for bruksglass, vindusglass og flasker. Det var flaskeproduksjonen som ble lagt til Verket. Brenselsspørsmålet var av avgjørende betydning. Det kom til en ordning at bøndene på vestsiden av Drammensfjorden skulle levere brenneved til glassverket og dermed slippe leveringsplikten til sølvverket på Kongsberg. Bygdelagene i Hurum og Røyken skulle trå til med ved om vestsiden ikke kunne levere nok brenne. I 1782 sto verket ferdig og en gang etter oktober måned det året ble glassovnene fyrt opp. - Det var blitt et mønsteranlegg. Fremdeles står flere av de store bygningene der, i vår tid tatt i bruk som bolighus og lager. Hele industrianlegget lå langs stranda sør for bygdeveien til sundstedet. Når verksbygningene ble plassert for seg selv nede ved vannkanten, var det sikkert for at glasshytta ble regnet for å være meget brannfarlig. Det var her som ved gårdsbruk flest i Norge, det ildsfarlige huset (smia) ble plassert langt unna de øvrige bygningene. Lagerbygningene for ved og ferdige produkter var plassert ute på øya også av samme grunn. En var føre vàr og hadde anskaffet både en brannsprøyte og 24 brannspann. De øvrige bygninger, der verksfolket skulle bo, ble bygd i god avstand fra driftsbygningene på oversiden av bygdeveien. Forvalterboligen hadde hele 9 rom + kjøkken og uthus. De 8 husene for arbeiderne var alle innrettet for to familier med stue, kammers og kjøkken til hver av familiene. På den store åpne plassen foran bygningene ble det plantet frukttrær, stikkelsbær- og ripsbusker og der skulle det dyrkes grønnsaker. Om poteten var tatt i bruk der, sier beretningene ingenting om, men det er vel tvilsomt, i alle fall de første årene. Bak våningshusene var plassert to bryggerhus, et med stor bakerovn, et stort vedskjul og ytterligere et stort uthus. Fastskole (verksskole) i egen bygning ble opprettet fra 1789. Det var èn klasse ved skolen. Arbeiderne skulle betale tilskudd til skolen på 2 skilling per tjente daler, dvs. en skoleskatt på 8 %. Første læreren het Engebret Rønning. Hans årslønn var 78 riksdaler. Undervisningsplan og instruks for læreren var lik den som ble brukt ved Hadelands glassverk på Jevnaker. Sommeren 1784 ble flaskeproduksjonen satt i gang med steinkullfyring. Verket fikk på det tidspunkt store ordrer på pommerske og engelske buteljer (flasker), dråpeglass og glass til kjemisk bruk. Oppstarten var ikke vellykket, steinkullfyringen gikk altfor sent og ble derfor dyr. Produktene ble dårligere enn ved vedfyring. Vedfyring ble derfor satt i gang ved ovn nr. 2. I 1785 ble det levert tusenvis av flasker for utskiping til Danmark. Verkets fraktebåter, to jakter, fraktet produktene til lager på Bragernes. Det endte med at de foreløpig måtte oppgi driften. De tyske glassblåserne og hjelpearbeiderne forlot verket og fikk seg arbeide ved andre glassverk i Norge. I januar 1787 startet verket opp på ny og denne gang lyktes det den nye forvalteren Heyerdahl å oppnå et årsoverskudd på 3000 riksdaler. Av regnskapene ser vi at den tyske glassmester Hans Just Kauffeldt betalte 7 riksdaler i skatt og 8 svenner, alle glassblåsere, betalte 5 riksdaler og 48 skilling i skatt hver. Schimmelmanns glassverk (oppkalt etter den dansk-norske finansminister) hadde en vekslende virksomhet utover på 1800-tallet. Det vekslet mellom driftsstans og større eller mindre produksjon. Under langvarig driftsstans var det ikke mer enn 4-5 glassblåsere på verket. Under vanlig drift var det 10 glassblåsere som laget flasker og apotekerglass. Antall hjelpe- og dagarbeidere var da 12-14 mann. Fast knyttet til verket hele tiden var forvalter, lærer og smed. I 1801 bodde det i alt 21 familier der med til sammen 93 mennesker. Etter 1814 ble verket den norske stats eiendom. Verket var forpaktet bort, men ble til slutt (1824) solgt til private. Det var Carsten Anker som var den drivende kraft bak Schimmelmann og de andre glassverkene i Norge. Tidvis bodde han i forvalterboligen, når han var på inspeksjon. I 1819 kom han med skarp kritikk av driftsdisposisjonene forvalteren ved Schimmelmann hadde foretatt seg. Tilstanden ved verket var ikke tilfredsstillende, særlig pekte Anker på forholdene i glasshytta og forfallet ved bygningene og brygga. Etter at selve drivkraften Anker døde i 1824, hanglet verket videre noen år og innstilte driften for godt i 1832. Sand er viktigste råvare i glassproduksjon. Schimmelmanns glassverk fikk enten sand fra en lokal forekomst (ikke sandtaket i Verket!) eller fra Danmark. Klart rent glass får en av ren kvartssand. Inneholder sanda jern får en brunt glass. Grønt glass får en ved tilsetting av forskjellige slags salter. She was buried in Fredrikstad church on the 29th of November and her grave is located in No. 4 in the southern wing of the western bend underneath (stholerne). I let my son Jørgen Wielsgaard go with Mr. Klef to Tour in England on May 12, 1753. To learn the English language and book-keeping. 14 Oct., 1754 I let my son Christen, travel with Mr. Kleff to Sonderborg in the Danish Holsten to study at the German school. 21 Feb., 1755 in the evening at 7:00pm my brother Jørgen died. He died before I returned home from the yearly General Conference with the custom - (Toldforpagtning Societetet) in Kristiania (now Oslo). It is very sad for me to not be able to talk to him before he left this troublesome life. Witnesses: My wife Magdalena Pedersdatter Wielsgaard, my daughter Pedernelle Holm and my daughter Maren Wielsgaard - - - and Peter Wielsgaard. 31 Aug., 1758 on a Thursday evening at 11:00pm, my daughter Drude Magdalena died from Childrens pox in an age of 6 years and 16 days. In 1759, my brother Hans became the Parish Priest to Nasbye and Tyvelse congregation in Sjalland at Mr. Count Holsteins Estates. (Tyvelse is in Prastø co,, Denmark, Sjalland is the island. There is also a Nasby in Prastø co., Denmark.) 3 Nov., 1760, my daughter Else Margrethe Tuchsen on a Monday morning 3:00am gave birth to a daughter (since she followed her husband to Holsein) the christening was performed at Wedel by Pinnenberg on the 8th of Nov. and was performed by the parish priest there - - - the child was given the name Magdalena from my deceased wife. 27 Feb., 1761, My daughter Maren Hoffnagel gave birth on Friday morning 9:30am to a daughter at Herebøe in Jd ( probably Idd) by Frrickshald (now Halden) and christened 6 Mar. by the name Elisabeth after his deceased wife. - - - - 13 June, 1761 my daughter Pedernelle Holm on a Saturday morning at 9:00am gave birth to a son who was christened the 18th by the name Jens. Witnesses ---- the old Aunt (mother sister) Abelone Thyrholm - - - - 17 June. 1761 on a Wednesday morning 3:00am my brother Mr. Priest over Gulbrandsdahlen and Parish Priest for ÿyer congregation bid farewell to this troublesome life Andreas Wielsgaard; His living widow Drude Catharine Foss, askedto keep his body for 3 weeks that his friends may come by. I Jens Wielsgaard and Sisiter Anne Marja traveled there to bring his body to its resting place in ÿyer church in the hallway by the christening. The 30th of (?) , after 9 weeks sickness; his death was very sad for his widow, siblings and friends. Have to accept the will of the Lord. He only lived 47 years 4 months 14 days. 21 Oct., 1761 a Wedsday morning 10:30am my daughters Son Jens died. My son in-law Friderich Holms child. - - - - 26 Jan., 1762 on a Tuesday, my son Jørgen Jensen Wielagaard married virgin Marthe Sophia Tønder, whose wedding was held at Seigr Niels Tanches house at Friderikhald (now Halden)and they stayed there on the north side. 22 Feb., 1762 on a Monday. My daughter Maren Hoffnagel gave birth to a daughter who was christened 1 March called after (oppkaldt) my dead wife Magdalena. 25 April 1762 the 2nd Sunday after Easter was my last daughter (youngest?) Apolone Christine Wielsgaard confirmed at a church at Raadstuen. 17 Dec., 1762 on a Friday morning at 5:00am my sister Anne Marja Jørgensdatter Fogh died in childbirth with twins. Of which one of the children died and were put in the coffin with the mother. She lived almost 38 years - - - and was buried at Fredrikstad church on 23 Dec., and put in the Hall by No. 4 on the west side of the southern wing. 30 Dec., 1762, I took my sister son Jens Fogh to stay with me, where God giveth Luck, and was born 9 Sept on a Saturday 1752. 22 Feb., 1763 on a Tuesday 7:30am. My beloved son in-law Friedrich Holm 37 years old. He was intensely sick for 2 days and was buried in Fredrikstad Church 1 March in Northern wing at the left side by his chair. (stohl) In this year 1736, February month was my son in-law Conductor Tuchsen made (Caractured Ober Conducteur by fortification) 6 April 1763 my daughter Else Margrethe Tuchsen in Christiania (Oslo) gave birth to a daughter who was christened 13 April by the name Johanne Sophia Amalia. Witnesses: Her father, was General Ulrichsdahl, Cammenherre Scheel andMr. Major Hauch by fortification Genelaljnde Graboue, Mrs Raadjnde Buchier and Miss Deichman. 2 May 1763 on a Monday at 5:00pm, my old mother Dorothes Andersdatter left this life and went to the heavenly happiness in an age of almost 80 years. She died quietly and was buried in the church under No. 3 on deceased dad. She was buried on 10 May with many people present. 11 May, 1763 after 13 days sickness my brother-in-law Nicolaj Johan Walther pharmacist here left this troublesome life with a slow death Wednesday morning 5:00am of great sorrow for my sister Johanne Cathrines after 6 years of marriage. He was buried in the church by No. 1 south wing on the west side by (Holy deceased), Teppe - - the 17th of May, with several people following him to his final resting place. 22 May, 1763 First day of Pentecost at 11:00pm my daughter Pedernelle Sal. Holm gave birth to a boy, Christened 27 May and named Friderich Christian - - - - 1 June, 1763, My son Christen Wielsgaard went to Hull in England to learn the language and bookkeeping, and arrived at his destination on 9 June. 13 Sept 1763 on a Tuesday, my youngest daughter Abelone Christine Wielsgaard married Mr. Lieutenant Lorents Brunn by the 3rd Thrundhiemsche regiment. The wedding was held at my house with friends. 6 Dec., 1763 on Tuesday at 11:30pm my daughter Apolone Christine gave birth to a daughter who was christened the 13th by the name Magdalene after my deceased wife. Witnesses: Pedernelle Holms, Dorothea Wielsgaard, and my brothersdaughter Dorthea Wielsgaard. - - - - 2 Mar., 1764 on a Friday, My son-in-law Mr. Lieut. Lorents Bruun my daughter Apolone Christine his wife and their children and Anne (nursemaid) to Trondheim. Their daughter Magdalena became ill. At the time they arrived at my Sal. Brothers wife, sister Drude Cathrine Wielsgaard at Kramperue in Øyer, Gulbrandsdahlen and died there 10 Mar., 1764 and was buried in Øyer church on Mar. 13, 1764 as told me by her parents. As of this writings my daughter Else Margrethe Sal. Tuchsens is her dearest husband Mr. Captain Johan Friderich Tuchsen after a long illness on the 8th of April 1764 died. He left this troublesome life in the evening 7:30pm. Godhelp her with her 3 children in patience. He died in Christiania (Oslo). My daughter Dorthe and Jens Lowum went to Christiania to help her in her hard times. 14 Nov., 1770, his widow Else Margrethe died and left three girl children and the last daughter Johane Sophie Amalie I kept with me to raise. Also after received writings from Hull, England my son Christen Wielsgaard (whom I let go to England to learn the language and book-keeping) was riding outside of town and fell into a deep ditch filled with water. The horse came back, but when they went looking for him they found him standing, dead. This should have happened on Mar. 6, 1764 and he was buried outside the city of Hull. This has upset me a great deal. May the lord give me patience to over come this sorrow. 1 May 1764 at 5:00pm a fire spread through Meyses widows house and continued up to 10:00pm, where most of Fredrikstad city was put to ashes, except most of the Kings houses which were not burned. It saddens me to announce that this caused the citizens to have lost what God had let them earn, their welfare. We must praise God both in sorrow and in prosperity. May his hand protect us, and my daughter Marte was chased away by the fire from me to her mother and moved to Frederikshald (Halden). 11 Sept 1764, my dead brothers wife Drude Catherine Wielsgaard I ÿyer in Gulbrandahlen, left this troublesome life, she died and went to a better place. She was buried in Øyer church with her deceased husband the 18th of Sept. according to her own wishes. 18 Sept., 1764 on a Tuesday, my daughter Dorthea Wielsgaard married her close cousin Sr. Jens Christian Lowum at Fredrikshald (Halden), and the wedding held at my son Jørgen Wielsgaard there. 9 Apr. 1765 at the 3rd day of Easter which was on a Tuesday at 9:30, my daughter Dorthe gave birth to a daughter who was christened 17 April and named Marthe. 19 Feb., 1766, my daughter Maren Hoffnagel left this world giving birth on the 14th of Feb. to 2 healthy boys, and she was buried in København the 24 Feb. 1766 in Frue Church graveyard. She left 4 children: 2 girls and 2 boys that are twins. 10 Sept., 1766 on Wednesday, my daughter Dorothea Lowum gave birth to a daughter that was christened the following Tuesday and named Marthe Magdalene in Fredrikshald church. I do not know who the witnesses are. In February 1768, my daughter Dorthe Lowum again gave birth to a child, a son named Ulrich Friderich. I do not know who the witnesses are. 19 Feb., 1769 my daughter Dorthea Lowum here in Fredrikstad gave birth to a daughter Sunday morning 9:00am who was christened Saturday 25 Feb. and named Karen Dorthea. - - - 15 December, 1769 on Friday morning in about 7:00am, I married Christine Musticheit, in my brother Peter Wielsgaard house my darling was born 5 Feb. 1724. 13 Oct., 1770 on a Saturday morning 12:30am, my sister Johane Cathrine Wielsgaard bid farwell from this troublesome world by a slow death. She was almost 41 years old, when she went into the MOST HIGH delight and left behind a daughter Sophie and her widowed husband Holger Fenslef Sinding, and was buried in the church by her 2nd men by their legs on the 19th Oct. From here Jens Wielsgaards datter Pedernelle take over....... 14 Sept., 1774 this books owner and writer slept unto a better life, Jens Jørgen Wielsgaard and was buried on the east side of the church. 4 Mar 1776, I Pedernelle born Wielsgaard married a widower, and citizen here in Fredrikstad Issack Nyegaard. 18 Oct., 1779 in the evening 7:00pm I gave birth to a son who was christened the 27th of Oct., by the name Jens Jacob. Witnesses was Rebecka Saxegaard and Even Romedahls wife, Mr. Edvardsen, Mr. Hans Østbye, Jens Østbye - Mr. Friling - this happened on Høland. 1 Nov., 1782 my much loved husband Isak Nyegaard died and was buried by Hemnes church in Høland. | Wielsgaard, Jens Jørgensen (I20603)
