Dorothy V. Swanson was born on April 7, 1920 on the family farm near Thompson, Iowa to Earl and Anna (Myhr) Ostrander. She graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1937.
On February 10, 1943, she married Wallace Swanson. They started farming in 1943 on land rented from Nels Swanson. They started building their own homestead in Grant Township in 1949. They continued farming until WallaceXs retirement. They were married 57 years until WallaceXs death in July of 2000.
Dorothy worked alongside Wallace on the farm and together they raised 5 children. She was a lifelong member of the Buffalo Center United Methodist Church. 4-H played a large role in her life. She was the Iowa 4-H state president in 1938, longtime leader of the Grant Gleaners 4-H club and was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2002. She was selected as the WallaceXs Farmers magazine Master Farm Homemaker in 1979.
She was a 50-year member of the Easter Star Rainbow Chapter of Buffalo Center and the Algona Star Chapter #68. In 1983, she served as the Grand Warder of the Iowa Order of the Eastern Star.
Dorothy loved woodworking, especially making pins and she made Christmas ornaments every year for each of her grandchildren. She sold and gave away many of her pins around the state. She loved fishing, gardening, baking, sewing and reading. She treasured time with friends at Birthday Club and her afternoon teas with neighborhood friends. She always had time for her family and their activities.
Those thankful for sharing her life are her five children: Duane and wife Deanna of Pine Island, MN: Butch and wife Roz of Buffalo Center; Brian and wife Kristie of Slater, IA; Ron and wife Eloise of Grundy Center, IA; and Cindy Kirkwold and husband John of Champlin, MN; her seventeen grandchildren: Dan, Dawn, Dione, David, Doug, Wendy, Brad, Rebecca, Noelle, Rachel, Abigail, Faith, Philip, Jared, Greg, Ben, Nate and 14 great-grandchildren; her brothers: Les Ostrander, Grant Ostrander and wife Barb, Ray Ostrander and wife Nancy; and by many nieces and nephews, all who will remember her for her many talents and cheerful smile.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wallace, her parents, and a brother Floyd Ostrander.
