    • {geni:about_me} Andrew Mowat of Hugoland.

Adlet i 1591)

Andrew Mowat, of Assetter, of Hugoland (both in Northmavine, Shetland). Probably born around 1535. Underfoud in Northmavine in 1589 (or perhaps it was his son John).11 Died 1610/11.

Married 1st before 25 September 1558 Ursula Tulloch, daughter of William Tulloch of Skea and probably Barbara Thomasdaughter. Ursula died before 1587.

Married 2nd shortly after 1587 Else Tronds, daughter of the Norwegian admiral Christoffer Trondsen and Karen Knutsdaughter Schanke.

After his second marriage he stayed in Norway in periods. The first years he stayed in Gjersvik (Tysnes, Norway), later at Hovland (also in Tysnes). But he always named himself "of Hugoland", even when he stayed in Norway.

      Children by Ursula Tulloch:

      1.John

      2. Malcolm

      3. Patrick

      4. Gilbert, ancestor of the Garth family.

      5. James of Ure, of Burrafirth. Most likely born after 1577.Married Agnes Pitcairn, daughter of Mr James Pitcairn, minister of Northmaven.

      Son:

      a. Gilbert, client of James Mowat in Paris. Married Margaret Forbes. He was a secretary to the Earl of Middleton and later to George, Marquis of Huntly from Whit 1662 to Whit 1663. Margaret died around 1714. She then lived in Canongate.

      6. Possibly: Barbara, married Edward Sinclair of Scalloway.

      7. Possibly: Catherine, married John Neven of Scousburgh, and was probably mother to his son Ninian. She died after 1610.

      Children by Else Tronds:

      8. Axel, of Hovland (in Tysnes, Norway).22 Born 1592. He was already in 1628 a captain in the Danish-Norwegian navy. In 1631 he became vice-admiral. Because of illness he had to leave the navy. The rest of his life he lived at Hovland and became on of the greatest Norwegian landowners. His lands later was converted into the barony of Rosendal - the only Norwegian barony ever. He married around 1625 Karen Bildt, daughter of Knut Bildt of Morland and Lungegård and Sidsel Brun. Axel died 27. January 1661. His wife died 1662 in Bergen. They are buried in the burial chapel by the church in Rosendal.

      Son:

      a. Malcolm, of Collafirth. Born around 1590. He may have been the father of

      1) James, of Collafirth, father of

      a) Ursilla, married Laurence Tarrel of Voe, who died in 1715.

    • http://home.c2i.net/cowe/mowat/hugoland.htm Elses 3. ektemann. Fra 'The
Science of Planck_LFI' (Oslo University) 'To start at the beginning, we
have to take a detour to 16t h century Scotland and Shetland. The
northern Scottish isle s, Shetland and Orkney, had from the Viking age
been closel y connected with Norway, the language was Norwegian (a Norw
egian dialect, called Norn, was spoken in remote places unt il the 18th
century) and they were ruled by the semi-indepe ndent Earl of Orkney as a
fief under the King of Norway. Th e Earl of Orkney was the second highest
ranking man in Norw ay, only the King ranked higher. Already in the 14th
centur y some Scottish influence came to Orkney and Shetland. Whe n the
last earl of Norwegian descent died in 1379, the earl dom was inherited
by the Lowland Scottish noble family Sinc lair. The first Sinclair was a
Norman knight, called de St . Clair, who had accompanied William the
Conqueror to Engla nd in 1066. For the next century, the highest ranking
Norwe gian after the King was a Scotsman. In 1471, the King of De
nmark-Norway (Denmark and Norway were from 1397 united i n a union which
lasted until 1814) gave the earldom of Orkn ey, including Shetland, to
the king of Scotland as securit y for a loan which was used to pay the
dowry when his daugh ter was married to the Scottish king. The loan was
never pa id back, and Orkney and Shetland have since then been par t of
Scotland. In the 16th century, a substantial immigration of Scotsme n to
Orkney and Shetland started, and several Scottish nobl emen managed to
acquire large estates on Shetland. One wh o most probably was among these
immigrating Scottish noblem en was the one who later laid the first
foundations for th e estates which would become Rosendal Barony in
Norway, And rew Mowatt. The Mowatt family also descended from one of th e
Norman knights who followed William the Conqueror, the fa mily name was
originally de Montealt. The family had acquir ed a fief in Scotland early
in the 12th century. In the 16t h century the main branch of the Mowatt
family held the lor dship of Balquholly in Aberdeenshire. Andrew Mowatt
was cle arly a close relative of the lord of Balquholly, but we d o not
know who his father was, and exactly what this kinshi p was. However, we
know that his mother was called Barbar a Sinclair, and that she was a
descendant of the earlier ea rls of Orkney. The first mention of Andrew
Mowatt in any kn own sources is from 1558. He was then clearly an adult,
h e was married to Ursula Tulloch, and he was an estate owne r on
Shetland, mentioned as the lord of Hugoland. Since n o Mowatts are found
in earlier Shetland sources, Andrew mos t probably had come from Scotland
as the first Mowatt on Sh etland some time before 1558. Besides his
landed estates o n Shetland, which he transferred to his sons in 1577,
Andre w Mowatt was also a businessman, owning a number of merchan t ships
and doing trade with Norway, Scotland and England . His wife Ursula died
some time in the 1580s, and in 158 7 he wrote an application to the King
of Scotland to be all owed to travel to Bergen in Norway to get married.
And shor tly after, he did travel to Bergen and there he married th e
twice before widowed Else Rustung, daughter of Admiral o f the
Danish-Norwegian Navy Christopher Trondsson Rustung , a most adventurous
person.'
døde i ung alder. Han bodde p aX Balquholly i Banffshire i Skottland. Mye
Bartholomew.
