- {geni:about_me} '''Isach Jørgen Coldevin''', lieutenant colonel and Dønnes estate owner.
Axel Coldevin writes in "Jordegods og Storgårder i Nord-Norge" (Estates and Storgårds in Northern Norway), there ensued some legends about Isach, including his arrival at Dønnes, a large farm on the island Dønna in Nordland.
"It was called the south of the country there were some 'stjernekiggere' who could not find the track of a star. They went further and further north to find it, until they came on Dønnesfjellet, a small mountain right up to the farm with a pretty outstanding views. There they found the star. the chairman of the team was just Isach Coldevin. When he saw the young 'Marianne' Tønder, how beautiful she was, he understood that here he had found the right star!"
A beautiful legend, but hardly very truthful, as Axel Coldevin also touched on. He believed that Isach Coldevin may have been in Dønnes on a military commission, perhaps mapping. But what Axel Coldevin might not know is that there actually was a tiny grain of truth in the folklore. Fact is that in 1769, just twenty years after the Coldevin's arrival, there was a company of astronomers sailing to Dønnes. They were on a mission to observe the transit of Venus in front of the sun, which would take place on the 3rd of June 1769. It was the company's plan to sail from Tromso so they could have views of the sun all day. Due to bad weather around the 20th May they dared not travel so far, so settled down with captain Coldevin and built an observatory, probably in the Dønnes mountain area. Unfortunately, the experienced astronomers did not see Venus, since it was quite cloudy that day. In return, they enjoyed themselves with the landowner, who surely must have been inspired by astronomers because he took the meteorological and astronomical measurements, which he then carried out systematically, in fact, the first of its kind in the North Country.
Isach was an enterprising gentleman. He was made a captain in 1752 and by 1783 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Coldevin also worked as an architect and builder. Among other things, he repaired some churches at Helgeland but mostly was involved in trade, which must have been very profitable because in 1760 he purchased all the Tjøtta properties of Petter Dass, from the poet priest's grandson. The Dønnes estate was very large and including parts of Vefsn and Rana. On the estate, the company also built boats which remained pretty much the same until the fire in 1892. It is hardly wrong to say that Dønnes became a powerhouse in Coldevin's time. It was also proposed to the government, that they build a city at Dønna to reduce the North's dependence on Bergen, but it was not to be. Instead, Bodo, became a town in 1816, with trading rights after the initiative of Bishop Mathias Bonsak Krogh .
