- At the age of 23, he came to Houston County and was employed as clerk by one Nicholas Koob of Caledonia. About the time of his marriage, Mr. Anderson left the employ of Mr. Koob and for awhile thereafter was engaged in the music business. He then opened a restaurant in Caledonia which he conducted for a short time afterwards serving as deputy sheriff and turnkey under Sheriff Walter Goergen. In March 1881, he came to Spring Grove and opened on Main street the restaurant and confectionery business which he has since conducted, having always remained at the same location. Brown Anderson was in the mercantile and restaurant business for more than fifty years. After his death, thebusiness was continued by his son Albert until his death in 1950 when it passed on to Albert, Jr. He operated it until 1954, then he moved to La Crosse, WI.
Caledonia Journal - May 10, 1893 - B. Anderson is improving his property considerably by leveling up his lot.
January 11, 1894 - Business changes seem to be getting quite numerous in our village of late. The last to which our attention has been called is a deal between Brown Anderson and Messrs. Paulson & Reierson wherein the former turns over to the latater, his entire stock of crockery, glassware and stonewear and receives in return their stock of stationery and plush goods and Brown Andeson will not handle crockery and glassware, that is to say for the present. We, however, have it from good authority that the crockery will in the near future go back to Mr. Andeson, or somewhere else, and that Messrs. Paulson & Reierson will embark in an exclusive Boot and Shoe business. Some may say, that we are talking though our hat, but just you wait and see.
Jun 16, 1904 - The Cement sidewalk builders are here.-- On Tuesday occurred the first move made by Spring Grove for the improvement of our sidewalks when a cement walk was placed around the dwelling of Banker Onsgard. Brown Anderson, the next door neighbor, was the nexty party to take up the good move by handing in his order for both an outside and inside walk. He has been bothered considerable with the water running from the street through his yard every spring and expects to remedy it by building a cement walk. A great many seem to be interested now since the improvement has commenced and if present indications continue there will be a big supply of these walks in town beforelong. Let it boom. We have some of the nicest dwelling properties in the county and with the addition of cement walks, they will be made very attractive.
27 September 1923 - The store buildings of Fred Anderson and Brown Anderson are being treated with a coat of paint, which will materially help the appearance of our Main Street.
12 March 1925 - B. Anderson has added an iceless fountain.
28 Jan 1926 - A deal was completed last week wherby Mervin Langum of Mabel will become associated with Brown Anderson and son Albert in the Confectionary business here. The new firm, which will be conducted under the name of "Anderson & Langum" are making plans for an addition to the present business. They contemplate adding a complete lunch and dinner service. The new firm starts March 1st.
17 February 1927 - For fifty years, Brown Anderson has been a Merchant of Spring Grove, all of which time he has been engaged in the Restaurant business. Recently he disposed of his interests in the Anderson-Langum restaurant tohis son Albert and Mr. Anderson Sr. has retired. Brown made good in his business and is certainily entitled to the vacation that he has just started on.
3 Mar 1927 - The firm of Anderson-Langum was dissolved on Monday. Albert Anderson remaining in the business. We have not learned what Mr. Langum will do.
Another son, Fred, also was in the mercantile business.
